Quy Ho on His Humble Beginnings and Work at Riot Games

Quy Ho’s journey to becoming a concept artist wasn’t easy. Conflicting ideas and inner voices pushed this aspiration aside for a long, long time. But despite that, once he realized that nothing else is as important and that he will eventually find himself doodling in his sketchbook anyway, he came to a decision and pursued a career in entertainment art. In the beginning, he barely knew how to draw and needed to work on a few other skills like communication and being held accountable, but concept art began to show promise in due time. The process wasn’t easy and took a lot of time, but eventually, certain clients kept coming back, the tiny commissions grew to be big projects, and the door to Riot was finally open.

Ignatius Tan and The Spirit of Miyazaki

Ignatius Tan is an Illustration Art Lead on Legends of Runeterra at Riot Games in Hong Kong. He grew up in Singapore, and as a kid, found influences in Studio Ghibli, old-school anime, and western animations like He-Man, X-Men and the ninja turtles. The signature style of Ghibli is most noticeable when you scroll through his portfolio where artworks and sketches celebrating Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away catch your attention almost immediately. It’s fun to see how the spirit of Miyazaki’s animated films lives on, shining through in the art of a whole generation of illustrators like the one we’ve interviewed here.

Grace Liu on the Art Behind Uniquely Stylized Games

The new Battle Chasers: Night War (2017) is a unique RPG game that needs its artists to work in a very specific art style—an art style like Grace Liu’s. It’s no surprise that hand-painted low-poly 3D will always feel at home in a stylized game, and that’s why the vast majority of you might have seen Liu’s work in games like Diablo III (2012) and League of Legends (2009). With nine years’ worth of experience and the opportunity to work at Blizzard Entertainment, Riot Games and Airship Syndicate, I’m sure that she has a lot to teach us all.

R&Ding With Riot Games’ Geoffrey Ernault

Geoffrey Ernault is a French concept artist based in Los Angeles. He’s currently working on R&D for Riot Games, so there’s a good chance we’ll be seeing his ideas come to life in the near future. Of course, this isn’t the first time Geoffrey and his team started from scratch. He was actually R&Ding for Guerrilla Cambridge when the team came up with RIGS: Mechanized Combat League—one of the first games made available on PlayStation VR. He’s only been with Riot for a little while, but in the interview, he said that, “Working at Riot felt like a natural progression to me, as I love being a part of projects at the core.” It seems that Geoffrey is a concept artist through and through.

Práve preto články tohto typu patria medzi zaujímavé čítanie a my veríme, že ani ten dnešný nebude iný. Thomas Stoop je nezávislý koncepčný dizajnér žijúci v Haarlem, v Holandsku. Študoval na HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht) a posledné roky pracoval na vytvorení osobného portfólia.
